Research Focus
The mechanisms that determine sex in insects are extremely diverse and evolutionarily labile. Sex can be determined in a variety of ways which can differ markedly between and even within very closely related groups. Moreover, mechanisms that appear to be equivalent may often involve very different fundamental processes. Sex determination in the insect order Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, and ants) has been studied extensively but is still not well understood. Complementary Sex Determination (CSD) is the best known mechanism in this order, but it does not explain sex determination in many parasitoid wasps.
